if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.
2 Timothy 2:13 NIV
God Stays Faithful
Between 1981 and 2021, there has been a 447% increase in the number of common-law couples in Canada. At the same time, the number of married couples grew by only 26%. In some parts of Canada, the number of married couples decreased during the 40-year period. Despite the rapid rise in the number of common-law couples and far slower growth of married couples, marriage is still the more common type of union. In 2021, 77% of all Canadian couples were married, while 23% were common-law couples.

In spite of the liberalization of mores in our society today, one of the strengths of a marriage is that there is an expectation that the vows that are made at the wedding ceremony are to be kept throughout life. By the grace of God, those vows are kept by both husband and wife. If this is the case with human love, how much more is it when it comes to God’s nature and God’s promises. The apostle Paul speaks to this in 2 Timothy 2:13: “if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” Human beings are too often faithless. How many marriages, even Christian one, have failed because a husband or wife failed to be faithful to their vows. How many friendships, business relationships, have failed because promises were not kept. The good news of what Paul says here is that God doesn’t depend on our faithfulness in order for Him to be faithful. He is by nature faithful, and you can count on Him keeping His promises. So read them in His word and cling to them in your hardest times.
These have been words from the heart.
