“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:15 NIV

We Will Serve the Lord

An estimated 1,500 nurses from a number of countries lost their lives during World War 1, serving the many troops who were injured or ill during that horrific conflict. Some died from disease or accidents, and some from enemy action. 53 Canadian nurses lost their lives during the war. In one incident, on 27 June 1918, 14 nurses were killed when their hospital ship HMHS Llandovery Castle was torpedoed while travelling from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Liverpool, England.

As a godly leader, Joshua understood the importance of a life totally surrendered to the Lord. As he led the people through the Promised Land, defeating enemies along the way, he led them with integrity and godly wisdom. He also understood their hearts, that so often wandered from the God who had led them out of bondage in Egypt, and eventually into the land He had promised their ancestors, as far back as Abraham. In Joshua 24, as the tribes of Israel are about to settle down, he calls the entire nation together, and in a moving speech, he reminds them of how God has led them to this point, faithful to them in every way. In Joshua 24:15 he lays the choice out for them: “’But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.’” This is a call to all. Don’t go back to your life before Christ – serve Him fully.

These have been words from the heart.
