I have great admiration for marathoners. I have friends who run marathons, including the Boston marathon, the epitome of these things. They learned a long time ago that you run very differently in a marathon than in the 100-metre dash. In a marathon, there is need for pacing and pushing through the emotional and physical wall that inevitably comes. The apostle Paul understood the marathon – they were common in his day as well. He uses this race as a metaphor for the Christian life. In Galatians 6:9 he writes: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” There is great satisfaction in completing a marathon. There is far greater satisfaction in running well in the Christian life. We all trip up – none of us are perfect. But when we do, we keep going, with our eyes on Jesus, pressing toward the goal of hearing His “well done.” Pace yourself in your walk with Jesus – take time to renew and refresh. And then keep going, by His grace and empowering. The harvest is just ahead, and what a time of joy that will be.

These have been words from the heart.
