They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

Psalm 112:7 NIV

Firm Hope

Back in 2009, the province of Ontario stood firm in support of its anti-stunt driving law. A second Ontario judge ruled that the province’s stunt driving legislation is unconstitutional, but provincial police said they would continue to lay charges. Back then a street-racing charge automatically led to a conviction, which carried a minimum fine of $2,000, an immediate driver suspension and vehicle impoundment, as well as a maximum jail sentence of six months. More than 15,000 drivers were charged under the stunt driving laws in the first two years.

Yesterday we spoke about the hopelessness that marks our world compared to those who walk with Jesus, the God of hope, who fills the hearts and lives of His followers with abundant hope. Well, not only is the hope He provides overflowing from our lives (no wonder Christians ought to be the most joyful people on the planet), but that hope also gives security to our lives in a world that is too often rocked by disaster, injustice and immorality. King David knew about the firm foundation hope gives to those who trust God. He writes about it in Psalm 112:7: “They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” It doesn’t take long watching one of the many 24-hour news channels or checking the news online to have our world rocked. On a personal level, as parents age, as accidents happen, as financial challenges and ill-health are experienced, our lives can so easily rocked. David experienced so much in his life, and yet he is able to write that there is no fear of bad news for those whose hearts trust God.

These have been words from the heart.
