But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.

1 Thessalonians 2:17 NIV

Face to Face

A recent cross-border survey highlights generational and national differences in how Canadians and Americans connect—whether by text, phone, or face-to-face. Earlier this year, 51 per cent of Americans and 45 per cent of Canadians reported finding text messages or emails impersonal. This sentiment was more common among those aged 55 and over in both the United States at 56 per cent, and Canada at 46 per cent. This being said, the vast majority of both Canadians and Americans believe quitting a job should be done in person.

We live in a world where virtual communication allows us to keep in touch with friends, ministry partners, and family who are far away. I spend a lot of time in online meetings with people from around the world. This is one of the blessings of technology. Our youngest son and his family live on Vancouver Island, a long way from us here in Ontario, and we do video chat weekly with them. But this past January they came to visit and nothing beats being together in person. Paul is writing to his friends in Thessalonica, and he shares the same sentiment. In 1 Thessalonians 2:17, we read, “But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.” One of the greatest blessings in being a follower of Jesus is we get the family of God as well. What a blessing to fellowship, in person, with other believers. Take time today to spend time with another Christian and enjoy time together.

These have been words from the heart.
