Knowing Nothing But Christ Crucified

Of all the American political parties in existence in the 19th century, perhaps none generated more controversy than the Know-Nothing Party, or the Know-Nothings. As immigration from Europe increased in the early 1800s, citizens who had been born in the United States began to feel resentment at the new arrivals, including French Canadians who were arriving in Maine in significant numbers. The Know Nothing party claimed responsibility for two violent acts of aggression against French Catholics in Maine in the 1850s.

We live in a world where information is available at our fingertips. We can search online and immediately find whatever we want to know. The challenge is that we also live in a world of fake news and untrustworthy information. We hardly know what to believe anymore. There is no better time than now to commit ourselves to what drove the apostle Paul. He wrote, in 1 Corinthians 2:2: “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” As we live our lives in an increasingly challenging world, we who are followers of Christ need to commit ourselves to knowing Jesus Christ. In order to do so, we need to take time every day in His Word, studying what it says about Jesus and inviting the Holy Spirit to draw us closer to Him. It does take resolve. Daily we need to recommit ourselves to the task of knowing Jesus more deeply, growing in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord. As we do, we will become more and more like Him, in compassion, holiness and joy.

These have been words from the heart.
