He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Psalm 91:4 NIV

Under His Wings

The Trumpeter Swan has the distinction of being the longest and heaviest living bird native to Canada. It is also recognized as the heaviest flying bird in the world. Trumpeter Swan adults are entirely white except for their black bills, legs, and feet. There is a black patch on their face, seemingly connecting their eyes to their bills. With a wingspan 183-259 centimetres, you can find Trumpeter Swans in marshes, lakes, and rivers with dense vegetation. They breed in open areas near shallow waters.

I have a favourite private retreat place, where I go to meet with the Lord during challenging times. It’s a little cemetery on a slight rise in the otherwise pool-table-flat corn and soybean fields near where I live, surrounded by a hedge of pine and cedar trees. It offers a place of cocooning, of protection and safety and reminds me of what the Lord promises in Psalm 91:4: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” God doesn’t have feathers and wings, of course. He is Spirit. But He loves us and always welcomes us when we come running to Him in our times of deepest needs. Whatever you are facing, God will cover you, protect you, cocoon you. Like a mother hen who naturally and lovingly hides her chicks when it starts to rain, God will hide you, the greatest object of His love, when the rains of challenges and disappointments come your way. Run to Him, hide in Him, trust in His faithfulness. He will be your shield, your protection and His peace will guard your heart and life.

These have been words from the heart.
