He makes grass grow for the cattle,
and plants for people to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth…
Psalm 104:14 NIV
Bringing Forth Food
Statistics Canada measures food insecurity using the Household Food Security Survey Module, which consists of 18 questions about experiences of food deprivation over the past 12 months. These experiences range in severity from worrying about running out of food to going whole days without eating, all due to financial constraints. Based on the data from Statistics Canada’s Canadian Income Survey, 17.8% of households in the ten provinces were food-insecure in 2022. This amounted to 6.9 million Canadians, including almost 1.8 million children under the age of 18.

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He taught us to pray for our daily bread. The Lord who created us cares for our every need. While Jesus’ coming was to redeem us and the rest of this fallen world, our faith is far more than just preparing us for eternity. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we meet the God who cares about us body, mind, and soul. King David understood this and writes this in Psalm 104:14: “He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate—bringing forth food from the earth…” When the people of Israel had left Egypt and were wandering in the wilderness, God provided manna and quail. We can trust Him to provide for our daily needs as well. And as followers of Christ, we can be the answer to the prayers of others, those who are suffering from food insecurity. We are the hands, feet, and heart of Jesus, called to give out of our plenty to help those who are in need. Trust God for your daily bread. And help those who are praying that the Lord would provide their daily bread.
These have been words from the heart.
