…though I myself have reasons for such confidence…
Philippians 3:4a NIV
Confidence in the Flesh
Each month, the polling company Ipsos asks Canada about their confidence in the Canadian economy. Last October’s insights show that while overall confidence remained stagnant, there is a contrast between an increasing optimism regarding personal prospects, juxtaposed with a waning confidence in the national economy. This trend suggests a dynamic shift of Canadians, anticipating tough economic times, may be proactively adapting their personal strategies in the face of challenging economic conditions.

In the eyes of the world, our credentials and honours, our degrees and experience, play a big role in how we are viewed. Not so within the Kingdom of God. In Philippians 3:4a, Paul writes about his own background by saying: “…though I myself have reasons for such confidence…” Paul’s words here remind us that worldly credentials and accomplishments, while impressive, are not the foundation of our faith. He had every reason to boast—his heritage, his zeal, his righteousness under the law—but he chose instead to count it all as loss for the sake of knowing Christ. This verse challenges us to examine where we place our confidence. Is it in our achievements, our status, or our reputation? Or is it in the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ? True peace and purpose comes not from what we’ve done, but from who we belong to. When our hearts are anchored in Christ, we are free from the pressure to prove ourselves. We can live with humility, knowing that our worth is secure in Him. Let this be a heart-check moment. Lay down the need to impress. Surrender the resume of your life. And rest in the truth that Jesus is enough.
These have been words from the heart.
