Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

On Your Guard

The Ceremonial Guard is an ad hoc military unit in the Canadian Armed Forces that performs the Changing of the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill and posts sentries at Rideau Hall. The Ceremonial Guard also takes part in many other functions, such as the annual Governor General’s review of the Guard. This inspection takes place prior to the first Guard mount on Parliament Hill normally in late June and the Canada Day celebration (specifically the noon show) on July 1.

Since before recorded history, nations have put their faith in their military to protect themselves from external enemies. We don’t have to get very far into the Bible before we begin to read of battles between individuals and countries. Here in Canada every time we sing our national anthem we promise to stand on guard. The Bible speaks about standing on guard as well, but not in a military sense. Paul the apostle writes in 1 Corinthians 16:13: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” As we live our lives for Jesus, there is a battle taking place – a war in the heavenlies between the powers of darkness and the powers of light. It is often fought in our souls and lives as well. The enemy of our souls wants to trip us up spiritually. He puts temptation in front of us, knowing that if we yield it will steal our joy and our victory. So, Paul reminds us to stand firm in the faith and be on our guard against temptation. You can count on it coming – so prepare yourself daily with time in God’s word and in prayer. Then be strong in Christ.

These have been words from the heart.
