Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

1 Thessalonians 3:10 NIV

Earnest Prayer

The English River Anglican mission was originally established at Lac La Ronge by James Settee, later one of the first native clergymen of the diocese. In 1852 the mission was moved to the current site, considered more suitable for farming and accessible for schooling and worship. Construction began at once, using timbers from Lac La Ronge and fittings from England. Financial difficulties slowed progress until 1856, but the finished church was praised for its gothic lines and interior detail. It now stands as the oldest church west of the Red River.

Years ago, when we were involved in children’s ministry, we would use a Jungle Doctor film that introduced the Gospel to children. At the end of the film, the words used were “not The End, but The Beginning,” the point being that when we enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ, we begin a new life. That relationship comes by faith, but as our relationship to Jesus deepens, and we experience all He does in us and through us, our faith grows. Paul speaks to this in 1 Thessalonians 3:10: “Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.” As we grow in Christ so does our faith. And even strong believers can have thin places—areas where fear still whispers, where understanding is incomplete, where courage needs reinforcement. Paul longs to be present with his friends in Thessalonica, to teach, encourage, and walk alongside them. This verse invites us to ask a gentle but honest question: Where is my faith lacking? And just as importantly, who has God placed in my life to help strengthen it?

These have been words from the heart.
