My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:26 NIV
Failing Flesh
A Toronto doctor is alerting Canadian tourists planning to head south about the re-emergence of skin-eating New World screwworms (NWS), which up until now had been contained in South America for over 25 years. The alert comes after a Canadian tourist returned home from Costa Rica infected with the worm in February. Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious diseases doctor with University Health Network, told Now Toronto that the NSW can become a “real problem” to tourists and agricultural systems, as their larvae are capable of penetrating and eating animal flesh causing serious damage or even death.

It is obvious that our flesh often fails. It’s why we expect that our medical system here in Canada is a priority – we count on getting good medical care when we need it. We are blessed to live in the day we do – it wasn’t long ago that many of the medical procedures common today were non-existent. Back in the days of King David, life spans were much shorter than they are now. So, it shouldn’t surprise us that he would write, in Psalm 73:26: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.” David understood that when we face the normal challenges of life in a world that is far from perfect, our Creator offers us His healing and his strength. You are never alone in this world. The God who created all things and who revealed Himself to us in Jesus Christ, has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us. When your flesh and heart fail, God is right there with all the strength you need.
These have been words from the heart.
