And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
1 Thessalonians 5:14 NIV
Admonish
Back in April 2024, The House of Commons admonished a private citizen for the first time in more than 100 years. It was part of the fallout over the charge of poor management of the ArriveCan app during the Covid-era. GC Strategies partner, Kristian Firth, was ordered to appear before the bar of the House after refusing to answer certain questions at a committee hearing. A hush fell over the House of Commons as he appeared shortly after question period alongside his lawyer.

Everybody has a story and each story is unique. Each one of us has had a lifetime of experiences, that along with our DNA, makes us what we are today. I remember back in my studies at the Faculty of Education being taught that one of the most important things a teacher needs to understand is that every child is different and has a unique style of learning. The apostle Paul understands that everyone in the Body of Christ is unique as well, and mature leaders understand this. He writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:14: “And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” Among God’s people, some need a loving admonition – not harshly, and not publicly, —but a gentle nudge back toward faithfulness. Others are timid. They carry quiet fears, silent doubts. They don’t need correction; they need courage breathed into their hearts. And then there are the weak—those worn down by grief, temptation, or exhaustion. They don’t need a sermon. They need a steady arm beside them. And over it all, Paul says, be patient with everyone.
These have been words from the heart.
