But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 NIV

No Law Against

Canadian laws are based on two main legal systems: Common law, which originated in England, is followed in 9 provinces and territories. Civil law is followed in Québec. Canada’s legal system is based on British “common law” traditions, and legal rights are protected by a written constitution and a Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Only the Canadian federal government has the ability to make criminal law. Laws that violate the Constitution can be overturned by Canadian courts, with the Supreme Court of Canada being the highest authority.

Most laws help keep things functioning well in a healthy society. When we are driving safely and obeying the law, for example, aren’t you glad to see the police patrolling the roads to ensure that those who are not doing so are being watched? God’s laws are given for us to know how we ought to live in relationship with Him and others. Since the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, His laws are written in the hearts of all of Jesus’ followers, as He has taken up residence in us. At the same time, He is working in us to produce the fruit of the Spirit, forming Christlikeness in us. Paul describes that spiritual fruit in Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Instead of trying our best to try to keep God’s laws, as He develops His fruit in us, we naturally live in such a way that we are living according to God’s laws – looking more and more like Jesus, whose spiritual fruit is always perfect.
