For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
1 Thessalonians 5:7 NIV
At Night
Upper Canada Village is a historical site in Morrisburg, Ontario, that recreates life in a 19th-century village, offering immersive experiences and various events during the year. During the Alight the Night Festival, which runs over the Christmas season, one million lights illuminate the village. One select night during the festival, up to four guests at a time can enjoy a cozy 30-minute carriage ride – a truly intimate and magical experience. Other night guests can enjoy the warmth of their cars as they drive through the village to enjoy the sights.

The adage that nothing good happens at night is true. There is a reason why the Bible uses darkness and night as a symbol of sin and ungodliness. Night seems to dull the senses, making compromise seem less dangerous and sin seem less serious. Paul speaks to this in 1 Thessalonians 5:7: “For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.” As followers of Christ, we must not live in the shadows. But it can happen. Spiritual sleep does not usually come suddenly. It drifts in quietly—through neglect of prayer, a cooling love for the Word, or small compromises that seem harmless at first. Before long, the heart grows drowsy. The passion we once felt becomes routine. The alertness we once had fades. If you have allowed the spirit of the age to lull you into comfort and complacency, the beauty of God’s grace is that He awakens us. His Spirit stirs us. His Word shines light into dark corners. When we respond, we step back into clarity, strength, and purpose. Today, let’s choose to stay awake and choose to walk in the light of Jesus.
These have been words from the heart.
