Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:34 NIV
Do Not Worry
In March of last year, a report was released that stated Canadians’ self-rated mental health has declined since 2015, and the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to worsened anxiety and feelings of depression. Governments across Canada are working to improve equitable access to mental health services to address the growing need for care. The results from the 2023 Commonwealth Fund survey of adults in 10 high-income countries highlight both Canadians’ increasing mental health needs and the economic stressors that create barriers to accessing mental health services.

There is much in our world that can cause worry – financial challenges, wayward children, marriage issues, job insecurity. Too often we stay up at night worrying about what “might be.” As followers of Jesus, how do we combat this? Jesus gives us this command in Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Jesus gives us some really practical advice here during the sermon on the mount. First, he tells us not to worry about tomorrow – that today has enough concerns of its own. Just as he commanded us to pray for our good each day, so He commands us to trust Him for today. In other words, our walk with Jesus is one day at a time. That doesn’t mean we don’t make plans; it just means that we don’t fret about what might be – instead we focus on trusting Him for what is now. Second, He tells us that by the time we get to tomorrow, it will be today, and we can trust Him again for that.
These have been words from the heart.
