There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV
A Time for Everything
A year ago, CBC announced that they would skip their annual New Year’s Eve broadcast due to financial pressures. Instead, they aired a new Just For Laughs special hosted by comedian Mae Martin. The hour-long taped show did not include a countdown. It was followed at midnight by episodes of Comedy Night with Rick Mercer as the new year rolled in. It was a notable change for CBC, which has long been a reliable stop for viewers on the momentous night.

It is New Year’s Eve. Today is a day for looking back and looking forward. There was much in 2024 for which to be grateful – we often experienced the goodness of God. There were also times of challenge, disappointment and heartbreak. When King Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, he wrote this, in chapter 3 verse 1: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” God has everything under control. Nothing comes our way that hasn’t first passed His okay. He loves us, and through good days and not so good days, God is with us, the times of our lives fully in His hands. It will be so in 2025. We have no idea what lies ahead, but we know our God is there already and so nothing that happens, good or challenging, comes as a surprise to Him. As we have trusted Him in the past, so we can trust Him again for everything that comes our way in the New Year. Today, the final day before 2025, look with faith to all God has for you in the year ahead.
These have been words from the heart.
