And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”

Genesis 3:15 NIV

The First Promise of a Saviour

From the acclaimed historian Charlotte Gray comes a richly rewarding book about what it means to be Canadian. Readers already know Gray as an award-winning biographer, a writer who has brilliantly captured significant individuals and dramatic moments in our history. Now, in The Promise of Canada, she weaves together masterful portraits of nine influential Canadians, creating a unique history of our country. Gray has chosen Canadians—some well-known, others less so—whose ideas, she argues, have become part of our collective conversation about who we are as a people.

If you’re like me, you must wonder, some days, why God created the world, knowing what He knew things would look like. He knew that sin would enter into the heart of Adam and Eve and through them to all human beings who would come later. His perfect creation would be marred by sin. Knowing all of this, the Creator went ahead with his work of creating, already having formed a plan to redeem what would be lost. When sin finally did become a reality, God immediately began to reveal that plan. God says this, in Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” There are two times in Scripture when Satan believed he had been victorious – when sin entered into the world, and when Jesus was crucified. The resurrection of Jesus would be his ultimate defeat. The Lord knew this – as far back as the Garden of Eden the coming of Jesus was promised.

These have been words from the heart.
