Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

In Season and Out of Season

The divergenttravelers.com website gives some advice to potential visitors about what season might be best to visit our country. Summer is peak season in Canada when the weather is at its best. Winter is cold, snowy, and icy, but it’s the perfect time for skiing and snowboarding. Spring and autumn are lovely and come with fewer crowds, but the weather can be unpredictable. The best time to visit Canada will depend on what activities you’re looking to enjoy, and how many other tourists you don’t mind sharing that experience with.

I have a friend who prays every day that the Lord will lead him to someone with whom He can share Jesus. He says the Lord usually answers that prayer, in some really interesting ways – and he has learned what it means to do so “in season and out of season.” The phrase is based on the apostle Paul’s admonition in 2 Timothy 4:2: “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction.” Sometimes God gives opportunity to share the good news of Jesus in a setting that seems very natural – in a church service or Bible study – in the season where it is easy. But often the opportunity to share Jesus happens “out of season” – sitting on a plane, or as happened recently, to my son’s neighbour standing in his driveway. Whatever the situation, whatever the “season” we need to be so in tune with God’s leading that we take every opportunity to share the love of Jesus with others, inviting them to come and see what the Lord can do for them.
