…as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.
Philippians 3:6 NIV
Keeping the Law
Canada and the United States share similarities in their legal systems, as both are based on English common law. However, there are significant differences in their criminal justice systems, voting laws, and cultural attitudes towards issues like gun control and free speech. These differences have led some to argue that Canada appears more elitist and law-abiding than the US. For example, in Canada, individuals with felony convictions can still vote, and there is only one federal criminal code across the country.

A lot of people in our world are passionate about their beliefs. Social media is filled with people expounding their views on just about everything. One statement by Paul puts all of this into perspective. In Philippians 3:6, he writes: “…as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.” Paul’s words here reflect a sobering truth – it’s possible to be passionately wrong. Before encountering Christ, Paul was zealous in his pursuit of righteousness through the law, even to the point of persecuting the church. His intentions were sincere, but his direction was misguided. This verse challenges us to examine the source of our zeal. Are we driven by a desire to prove ourselves, or are we moved by the grace of God? When our hearts are aligned with God’s grace, our zeal becomes a powerful force for love, truth, and healing. But when it’s rooted in pride or tradition alone, it can lead us away from the heart of God. Let us be people whose passion is shaped by the cross, not by performance. May our hearts burn not for self-righteousness, but for the righteousness that comes from knowing Jesus.
These have been words from the heart.
