Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Romans 12:12 NIV

Joyful, Patient, Faithful

According to the website Daily Life, “Despite colder climates than other countries, Canadians seem to be happy even in the harshest weather conditions. It seems that this trend boils down to Canadians being a generally positive people. The amazing thing about spreading joy is that it works to increase your own happiness. The act of consciously being kind and thinking of others will instill confidence and increase your own self-esteem – as self-esteem can most easily be increased by participating in estimable acts.”

We all have good days and not so good days. There are days when everything is coming up roses, to use a cliché, and other days when we are dealing with the thorns. The apostle Paul certainly knew this. He speaks of both kinds of days in his epistles, and he gives us practical counsel in how we should act when we do. In Romans 12:12 he writes, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” In days filled with hope, be joyful. Too often, to those who are not followers of Jesus, the Christian faith is seen as being dour and difficult. In fact, followers of Jesus ought to be the most joyful of all people – we have experienced our sins being lifted and walk daily with our Creator. On days when we are filled with hope – and these should be the most common – be joyful. Let others see Jesus in your joy. In days when we face affliction – be patient. God has this, and let others see that He does. And every day, good or bad, be faithful in prayer.

These have been words from the heart.
