…so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ…
Philippians 1:10 NIV
The Day of Christ
September 1, 1905, was a big day in Canadian history – it was the day Alberta and Saskatchewan became Canada’s 8th and 9th provinces. On that day, the Calgary Herald wrote, “Amid the booming of a royal salute of twenty-one guns, G.H.V. Bulyea was at noon sworn in as Lieutenant-Governor and Alberta assumed the provincial status. J.J. McGee, secretary of the Privy Council, administered the oath in the presence of the most representative gathering the West has ever witnessed. The Governor-General and his staff in brilliant uniforms, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and a large number of chief officials of the Dominion government were the centre of the group.”

As Paul begins his letter to the believers in Philippi, he pours out his heart to them, telling them that he loves them with the same love as Jesus has for them, and then calls them to love each other with the same love and increasingly so. Then he goes on to give them a promise if they do so. Philippians 1:10 says, “…so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ…” Jesus is coming again – that is going to be the most amazing of all days. Paul calls it the day of Christ and gives a great promise to the Philippian believers and us – as we love others in the same way we have experienced God’s love, we will stand pure and blameless on the day that Jesus returns. In the meantime, as we more and more love each other with the love of Jesus, we will be able to more easily discern the will of God. Church, love each other with the love of Jesus.
These have been words from the heart.
