But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, section 11(d), guarantees Canadians the right to be presumed innocent. Specifically, anyone detained or charged with an offence has the right “to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal.” The presumption of innocence is the reason why an accused who is charged with a serious criminal offence must be appointed a lawyer if they are not financially able to retain counsel or represent themselves.

We live in a world that celebrates charisma over character. Social media is filled with people whose entire existence is to be noticed – and they go to great lengths to get everyone’s attention. What a contrast to what the apostle Paul says about Timothy in Philippians 2:22: “But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.” Paul’s words about Timothy are more than a commendation—they are a glimpse into the kind of heart God values in ministry. Timothy didn’t just work alongside Paul; he served with the humility, loyalty, and teachability of a son. His character wasn’t built overnight—it was proven through consistent faithfulness, even when no one was watching. Timothy’s life challenges us to ask: Are we serving with a heart that reflects Jesus? Are we willing to be mentored, corrected, and refined? God isn’t looking for perfection—He’s looking for hearts that are willing to grow, serve, and love deeply. Like Timothy, may our lives be marked by quiet faithfulness and a love for the gospel that speaks louder than words.
These have been words from the heart.
