The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters…

Psalm 23:1-2 NIV

Lacking Nothing

In 2024, a Toronto-based research team met with and surveyed some 10,000 Canadians about the state of the health-care system — and what they found is deep dissatisfaction and frustration with primary care as the country grapples with a severe lack of family doctors. The OurCare Initiative — led by Dr. Tara Kiran, a family doctor and scientist with the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital — conducted a national survey, assembled five “provincial priorities panels” and convened a series of community roundtables over the past 16 months.

If you could make a list of all the things you’re lacking, how long would that list be? Many of us are pretty comfortable – there are things that we would like, but really very little that we need. Except, if we were honest with ourselves, we are all spiritually needy people. We carry around guilt, sin, and shame that too often weighs us down and leave us feeling empty and without hope. King David had committed shameful acts, which led to his own grief and a dysfunctional family. He learned pretty quickly, however, the power of repentance and grace. So, he was able to write, in Psalm 23:1-2: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters…” It was Augustine who said that we each have a Jesus-sized hole in our soul that is only filled when it is filled with Him. When He becomes our Shepherd, we have peace that is inexplicable. He meets our deepest spiritual need, and when we know Him, we lack nothing. Put your trust in Jesus today.

These have been words from the heart.
