For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

The Encouragement of the Scriptures

Famous Canadians have often given words of encouragement. For example, ballet dancer Karen Kain once said, “Make more time for yourself: simplify, unplug and really focus on living in the present.” Journalist Sally Armstrong said, “Moral courage is a concept that isn’t talked about but is always noticed by its absence.” Author Louise Penny said: “It’s difficult to learn from success. I’ve learned more from my mistakes.” Finally, the words of Ron Sexsmith, “I was planning on starting my diet this week. But I have too much on my plate.”

Self-help gurus come and go. Some of the things they write can be helpful, no doubt, but when you are lying in a hospital facing a crisis with someone you love, or facing eternity yourself, there is nothing in any of the self-help books that will give you the peace and hope for which you long at that moment. Where can you turn? Paul the apostle writes this in Romans 15:4: “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” It is no surprise that men and women all over the world turn to the Bible when life sends its most challenging situation. It has lasted millennia because in its pages we find the hope that is found nowhere else. It tells of a God who loves us and who has defeated the grave. It gives the assurance of eternal life and the promise of eternity to all who put their faith and trust in Jesus. This, and more is the hope we have through the Scriptures.

These have been words from the heart.
