Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Spend a bit of time on YouTube and you will soon discover just how many cults and quasi-Christian groups are out there who attract followers but whose teachings are far from the Biblical teaching on the person of Christ and salvation by grace through faith. There is so much in our world, even in the religious world, that is error, leading to confusion and questioning. Social media is filled with those who have left faith altogether because they suffered abuse in cults and false religions. We are involved in a spiritual war for truth, and it has ever been so. The apostle writes this in 1 John 4:1: “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” We are called to stand for truth in our day. In order to do so, we must study God’s Word and trust it. We must test every spirit against what God has revealed in the Bible – our only source of truth. God’s word is a gift from the author, and by studying it we will stand strong for Him in our day.
