God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1 NIV

A Help

During the devastating wildfires in California this past January, many Canadian provinces sent help in fighting the flames. For example, Alberta sent a trained and experienced crew of some 40 Type 1 wildland firefighters. Additional Type 1 firefighters, Incident Command personnel, and qualified support staff were also ready to go when requested. Alberta also sent along water bombers and contracted night vision helicopters. British Columbia has a long-standing bilateral relationship with CAL Fire, and based on a request for support, sent a team of senior technical staff to fill specialized incident command system functions.

You’ve probably noticed that life can be challenging. On a macro level, the world seems to be rocking right now and social media makes us more aware of things than we would have been a generation ago. The geopolitical situation has made life even more difficult for families and people on limited or fixed incomes. It can seem that we have no control over our lives, and we are facing things on our own. The good news is that we are not. There is a wonderful promise in the Hebrew songbook we call the book of Psalms. Many are written by King David, but not all, and Psalm 46, we are told is from the Director of Music, whoever he is. He begins with this promise, Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” The author of these words had obviously experienced God’s presence in the midst of His challenges. So will we. Our Creator is only a prayer away and when we reach out to Him in Jesus, we will find He is with us and will help us.

These have been words from the heart.
