Pondering

Kelowna, B.C., which hosts the largest RCMP detachment in Canada, is pondering the possibility of ditching the national police force. The city has issued a request for bids, seeking a company to conduct a review of its current policing model and compare it to a municipal police force. The review will recommend the “optimal model” for Kelowna based on factors including value for service and capacity to meet future demands. It follows a March report from the federal government that suggested that the national police force begin transitioning away from providing contract policing to municipalities.

As we move on past the Christmas celebrations towards the new year, this is a good time to consider the long-term impact of Jesus’ arrival on us. Most of the world will just move on – except for the decorations, the focus now is on resolutions, looking back and looking forward, and New Year’s Eve parties. But for those of us who are followers of Jesus, we need to be like Mary as the shepherds left to do their work of evangelism – telling everyone what they had experienced in meeting Jesus. Luke 2:19 says, “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” As we ponder all that we have celebrated over the past Advent and Christmas, we ask the question, “how will this impact my life?” That really ought to be the theme of our thoughts and prayers at this time of the year. What has Jesus done for us this year? What does His presence in my life mean for the New Year? This is a good time of the year to ponder.

These have been words from the heart.
