Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 3:23-24 NIV

Whatever You Do

There are some things that Canadians do that are unique to our country. We are not the only country to have some form of Thanksgiving holiday, but we are the only one who celebrates Thanksgiving in October. On the second Monday in October, most Canadians devour a meal of turkey with all the trimmings, followed by pumpkin pie. Canadian Thanksgiving doesn’t hark back to Pilgrims feasting with native North Americans as the US version does. It’s more just an old-fashioned knees-up. It fills a nice gap in the calendar about halfway between summer and Christmas.

What is the driving force behind what you do with your time and talents? That is the question every follower of Jesus needs to ask, and the answer says a lot about the place that Jesus has in our hearts. It’s not that everyone needs to be involved in full-time ministry – that is a specific calling and isn’t for everyone. But if Jesus comes first in our lives, then everything we do needs to honour Him. The apostle Paul speaks to this in Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Follower of Jesus, whoever your human boss is, you are not ultimately serving that person, you are serving Christ. Knowing this should have an impact on how you do your job, on your work-life balance, and the priorities you set for your time. As you set about your day, how does knowing that you are serving Christ today affect how you are spending your day?
