and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

Revelation 1:6 NIV

A Kingdom

Canada is a constitutional monarchy. The Monarch is the Head of State, whose powers are defined by the Constitution and constitutional conventions. These responsibilities are carried out by the Governor General. The positions of Head of State and Head of Government are held by separate people. The Prime Minister is the Head of Government, and the Monarch – currently His Majesty King Charles III – is the Head of State. Canada shares its Monarch with several other Commonwealth realms such as Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

When Canada was being created by our Fathers of Confederation, some wanted to call it the Kingdom of Canada. Actually, that is what Canada is as a constitutional monarchy. If the Christians of any nation should understand what John writes in Revelation 1:6, Canadians should. The apostle writes, “and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father – to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.” All who name Jesus as Saviour and Lord have Him as our King. As we live with each other in fellowship together, we need to be reminded that we are citizens of the Kingdom of God, with King Jesus as our monarch. John the apostle caught a glimpse of what will mean when we reach the end of this age and are gathered together in the heavenly Kingdom, worshipping in the presence of Almighty God. Our King rules with perfect justice and all that is unclear to us at this point, because we’ve never experienced the fullness of this Kingdom, will be clear in this Day. But even now, we are a kingdom of priests serving God.

These have been words from the heart.
