And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV

The Word of God

According to the literary website Shortform, the best current book on Canadian history is Champlain’s Dream. In this sweeping, enthralling biography, acclaimed historian David Hackett Fischer brings to life the remarkable Samuel de Champlain — soldier, spy, master mariner, explorer, cartographer, artist, and Father of New France. On foot and by ship and canoe, he travelled through what are now six Canadian provinces and five American states. Over more than thirty years, he founded, colonized, and administered French settlements in North America.

At Bible League Canada, we often receive stories from our partners around the world of the transforming power of the Bible. We recently heard about one man who hated Christians, until he picked up the Bible and started to read. He couldn’t put it down and after reading it all night, by morning, he had become a committed follower of Jesus. He was forever changed. Paul the apostle, wrote about the uniqueness of God’s Word in 1 Thessalonians 2:13: “And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.” Whenever we read the Bible, we can count on God speaking into our lives through it and doing His work of transforming us to become more and more like Him. Paul reminds us that God’s Word is active. It convicts, comforts, challenges, and changes those who believe. The question is not whether the Word has power—the question is whether we will receive it with open hands and humble hearts.

These have been words from the heart.
