When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12 NIV
Jesus, The Light of the World
Northern Manitoba is in the sub-Arctic Circle, bordering Hudson Bay. Up here, you’ll find Churchill, considered one of the top places in the world to see the aurora borealis. The winter months of January, February and March offer the best experience, though you have the chance to see the northern lights most of the year. Why is Churchill a top spot? Its longer nights and colder conditions mean the northern lights often appear brighter and remain in the sky longer.

Today is March 1, the first day of meteorological Spring. Most of us mark Spring as starting on March 21, the time of the vernal equinox, but your friendly local meteorologist will be celebrating the arrival of Spring today. The days here in Canada are getting longer and we live in the hope of winter’s end. The world can be a dark place, and not just in the rhythm of the seasons. When the sinful heart is allowed free reign, there is much that is vile. Which is the very reason that Jesus came. In John 8:12 we read, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” Sin had ruled the world since the day Adam and Eve disobeyed God. It all changed when Jesus arrived. By His presence, and by His death and resurrection, sin was defeated, and death lost its sting. It’s no wonder that Jesus’ arrival was marked by so much light. He brings the light of forgiveness and grace into every heart that receives Him by faith.
These have been words from the heart.
