In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8 NIV

Lie Down and Sleep

According to Canadian Living Magazine online, “Whether sprawled sideways across the mattress or curled into a contented ball, we all have our preferred position for drifting off into a peaceful slumber. But is there more to it than just personal comfort? A Recent study conducted by Dr. Chris Idzikowski, director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, noted that when over 1,000 adults were surveyed, there appeared to be a possible correlation between a subject’s sleeping position and aspects of their daytime personality.

It seems that we all fall asleep differently. Some nod off as soon as their head hits the pillow. Others take time to fall asleep, tossing and turning until exhaustion finally wins out. Even those who usually sleep well have nights when their mind is racing with the thoughts of the day just past or filled with shame and regret. King David had reasons not to sleep well. He had committed some pretty horrible crimes and had been caught. But he had also experienced God’s forgiving and renewing grace. So, he was able to write, in Psalm 4:8: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” David had not only experienced God’s grace and forgiveness, he experienced God’s peace and safety in the midst of those who sought his life and his throne, even from within his own family. When our lives are right with the Lord, we are guaranteed a good night’s sleep. He gives our mind peace as we walk with Him, with the assurance that He is holding us and protecting us. Ask Him to forgive you and grant to you the sweet sleep that comes to all who trust Him.
