Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Psalm 136:1 NIV
Thanksgiving
Beginning in 1921, Thanksgiving and Armistice Day (introduced in 1919) were celebrated on the same day — the first Monday in the week of the 11th of November. In order to give more recognition to veterans, November 11th was set solely as Remembrance Day in 1931. Thanksgiving was again proclaimed annually and typically observed on the second Monday in October. It was not until the 31st of January 1957 that Parliament proclaimed the observance of the second Monday in October as “a day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”

Happy Thanksgiving. As Canadians, there is so much for which we should be thankful. In spite of the economic challenges in our world today, we are so blessed as a nation. One of those blessings is that we have had godly leaders who recognized the bounty that our God has provided. Many of us enjoy comfortable lives, so much so that the average Canadian doesn’t admit a need for a relationship with the God who created them and loves them. We are much wiser to heed the words of King David in Psalm 136:1: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures for ever.” Those words were written thousands of years ago, but the words were carefully chosen by the Holy Spirit to remind those of us living all these years later that through the passing of time, the love of God remains the same. And for that, and all the blessings that He has provided for His people in every generation, we are called to give thanks. God is good. He always has been, and He always will be. Today, and every day, give thanks.
These have been words from the heart.
