Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Romans 12:12 NIV

Be What?

There are things that make living in Canada difficult. Canada’s record low temperature in Snag, Yukon was a face-freezing -62.8° C in February 1947. The most recent excessively-low temperature also occurred in the Yukon in Old Crow in 1975. From October 21st through February 20th, the town of Eureka in Nunavut experiences polar night, when the sun never appears above the horizon. Chinooks are always received with great relief, but Alberta Clippers bring much fear and collective Canadian gnashing of teeth.

It’s easy to be happy when all is going well. Anyone can rejoice when your bank account is full, there is plenty of food in your pantry and freezer, and you’re living in a comfortable home with lovely weather. But what happens when the catastrophes come, or if you’re grieving or dealing with a wayward child? In those days, it is natural to be discouraged and fearful. How, then, can the apostle Paul write these words in Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Paul didn’t write these words never having experienced the challenges of life. He gave up so much to follow Jesus. He knew what it was like to suffer persecution and imprisonment. Through it all he had learned that no matter what life sent his way, Jesus was his constant companion. He provided the patience in affliction as well as the hope that led to joy in the worst the world could throw his way. Paul calls us to recognize the abiding presence of Jesus in our lives as well. Whatever you are facing, the final chapter has not been written. Be patient, and joyful – and pray.

These have been words from the heart.
