Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Count Our Days

Canada’s life expectancy stands at a shade over 83 years. In 1950 the figure was 68.2, and by 2050 it’s expected to reach 86.7. On average, Canadians live significantly longer than Americans. Research indicates that Canada’s universal healthcare, and America’s lack thereof, is the key factor behind the life expectancy gap between the two countries. Other factors that contribute to the gap include Canada’s lower level of income inequality and much lower number of gun-related deaths per capita.

Most people live their lives with no concern for eternity and little concern over how brief life really is. Which backs up what C.S. Lewis once said, in response to those who claimed that Christians are too heavenly minded to be any earthly good, that it is only when we are heavenly minded that we have the most impact here on earth. King David recognized this and so wrote this in Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” When we take time to recognize that while eternity is forever, and our eternal life is guaranteed as we put our faith and trust in Jesus, our time here is brief, and we need to do all we can to bring Jesus and His love to our world while we are here. David tells us to number our days – to realize that we need to use each day as best we can as we walk with our Creator. We gain wisdom as we do so, having daily Kingdom impact. Take time today to consider how you can use this day for God’s glory and for the expansion of His eternal Kingdom.
