How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?
1 Thessalonians 3:9 NIV
Returning Thanksgiving
Expressing gratitude is an important social gesture that helps foster positive relationships and is deeply appreciated by Canadians. Canada is a vast country, and while expressions of gratitude generally remain consistent across the nation, a few regional variations can be found. In Quebec, for example, where French is widely spoken, “merci” is the most common way to express gratitude. You might also hear “merci beaucoup.” People in the Maritime provinces may say “much obliged” or “thanks kindly” to show their gratitude.

Paul writes his first letter to the church in Thessalonica, after his young friend Timothy has returned from there with a positive report about how well the believers are doing spiritually, following Paul’s departure. He had planted that church and cared deeply for those who had come to faith in Jesus while he was there. Hearing Timothy’s report, Paul is so encouraged and writes this in 1 Thessalonians 3:9: “How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?” God delights in seeing His work bear fruit. When we invest in others, pray for them, and encourage them in their walk with Christ, that joy comes back to us in a way that is deep and lasting. This is a holy satisfaction that springs from knowing that God is at work and that our lives are part of His eternal story. Take a moment today to rejoice over the growth and faithfulness of those around you. Let your heart overflow with gratitude, and give thanks to God, for He is the source of all joy.
These have been words from the heart.
