There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

No More Night

Fields of Endless Day is a 1978 Canadian docudrama film. The film dramatizes various vignettes from Black Canadian history, from the early settlement of New France in the 1600s through to the early 1930s. Stories depicted in the film include those of Mathieu da Costa, the first known free black person in Canada; Marie-Joseph Angélique, a slave who was controversially convicted and executed for purportedly burning down her master’s house in 1734; the abolition of slavery in Upper Canada by John Graves Simcoe in 1793 and the settling of Salt Spring Island by Black Canadians in the 1850s.

It is January, and while we have moved a month away from the shortest day of the year, the nights are still long. In Canada’s far north, the sun hasn’t risen above the horizon for some time. Sometimes it feels like spiritual night in our world. We hear too often the deeds done in the darkness and they break our hearts. The Bible gives us hope. As a new follower of Jesus once told me, after reading through Revelation, “I read the last chapter, and we win!” Yes, we do. That chapter, Revelation 22:5, tells us this “There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.” The darkness of spiritual night is coming to an end. What a blessing to experience the pure light of Jesus filling all the new heaven and new earth. In the long night of spiritual darkness, take hope, child of Jesus. A new day is coming.

These have been words from the heart.
