Many are the woes of the wicked,
but the LORD’S unfailing love
surrounds the one who trusts in him.
Psalm 32:10 NIV
Sorrows of the Wicked
Back in March of 2009, the search ended for 16 people who had been aboard a helicopter that crashed and sank in frigid waters east of Newfoundland, with grim-faced officials saying there was no chance the passengers were still alive. The announcement brought a sad but expected end to two long and trying days that had captivated the people in Newfoundland and Labrador. The crash drew an outpouring of sorrow, particularly in communities where residents lost family, friends, neighbours or colleagues.

There is no doubt that sin has consequences. I heard a report recently that said gambling in Canada has become a pandemic. Problem gambling has increased significantly in the past seven years. Alcohol abuse and illicit drug use have led to the destruction of lives, marriages and families. Sexual promiscuity has led to a significant rise in associated diseases and the heartbreak of broken relationships. Greed, lies, social media, and bribery have led to the current political toxicity and the destruction of leaders. It’s no wonder King David writes this in Psalm 32:10: “Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’S unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.” Many, indeed, are the woes of the wicked. What a contrast to those who live lives that represent the Kingdom of God. They have the assurance of the Lord’s never failing, always-consistent agape love. Followers of Jesus live so much more productive and joy-filled lives when they live according to the principles of the Kingdom of God and that represent well the holiness of God. Trust Him and experience His unfailing love.
These have been words from the heart.
