When Calls the Heart is an American television drama series, inspired by Janette Oke’s book of the same name from her Canadian West series, and developed by Michael Landon Jr. The series began airing on the Hallmark Channel in the United States on January 11, 2014, and, in Canada, on April 16, 2014, on Super Channel. The spinoff When Hope Calls began airing on August 30, 2019. It is the story of Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher accustomed to her high-society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, Alberta.

Few of us enjoy challenging times. Instead of celebrating these, we tend to focus on the worst, holding a “woe is me” pity party. This is natural – none of us love hard things. As usual, the Kingdom of God turns the things of the world on their heads. Not only are Christians not to bellyache about hard times, but Paul tells us this in 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Knowing that nothing ever comes our way that hasn’t first passed God’s okay helps us understand that God has everything under control. And in everything there are reasons for giving thanks. In fact, doing so helps lift our heads from the challenges and onto the God who loves us. Even in the most painful times, God is at work and gives us reasons for thanks. He surrounds us with people who love us, He provides His peace, He gives us the assurance that He will bring us out of this. We just need to keep our eyes on Him and the blessings He sends in all circumstances.
