His Riches

Bloomberg released its list of the world’s 25 richest families last December. According to the 2023 list, as a group, the world’s ultra-wealthy families have become a mind-boggling $1.5 trillion richer since the 2022 ranking. Only one of the wealthiest families in Canada has made it onto the list — the Thomsons. Currently worth $71.1 billion, the family is considered the country’s most affluent. According to Bloomberg, they climbed 10 spots from the last rankings. Four of the family members made this year’s Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

My dad was a very wise man. When I was in my early teens, I wanted a new street bike, with lots of gears that I could use for long trips on paved roads. I had a good bike – dad knew I needed that to get around. The bike I wanted, then, wasn’t a need, but a want. So, he said that he wouldn’t buy it for me, I’d have to save for it. I did, and learned an important lesson – as long as I lived under his roof, my dad would provide for my needs – my wants were another thing altogether. Paul the apostle speaks of God in these terms when he writes, in Philippians 4:19: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” God, like a loving Father, desires to meet our needs. That’s why Jesus taught us to pray “give us this day our daily bread.” God loves you and has all the resources of Glory to meet that prayer. Trust Him, your loving Father God, to meet your daily needs.

These have been words from the heart.
