You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.
Titus 2:1 NIV
Sound Doctrine
Military doctrine is the expression of how military forces contribute to campaigns, major operations, battles, and engagements. A military doctrine outlines what military means should be used. In 1998 the Canadian Army stated: Military doctrine is a formal expression of military knowledge and thought, that the army accepts as being relevant at a given time, which covers the nature of conflict, the preparation of the army for conflict, and the method of engaging in conflict to achieve success.

In his epistle to his friend Titus, Paul doesn’t hold back on those who are calling themselves followers of Christ, but who are walking in disobedience and denying Him by their actions. In chapter 1 of Titus, he calls them corrupted in their minds and consciences. He then goes on, in Titus 2:1, to say this to his brother in Christ and friend: “You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.” Why is sound doctrine so important? Because what we believe does have a direct impact on how we live. Having the right view of the person of Jesus and the gospel of grace is vital in living a life that brings glory to God and represents Jesus well in our world. Paul would go on from this verse about sound doctrine to give instructions about how each generation and gender should live out their faith in Jesus, in how they, we, should live our lives. If you are a teacher, preacher, pastor, given the great responsibility of preaching God’s Word, it is vital that you are first a student of God’s Word, with a healthy prayer life, studying first in order to bring people into relationship with the triune God.
These have been words from the heart.
