He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Psalm 91:4 NIV

I love birds, but I have to admit I don’t often think about their size. That is until I did an online search for today’s Words from the Heart and discovered there are a variety of ways to measure the size of a bird. The largest bird by weight in Canada is the Mute Swan at 416 ounces. The largest bird by length in Canada is the Trumpeter Swan at 72 inches. The largest bird by wingspan in Canada is the American White Pelican at 110 inches.

While the Bible is very clear that God doesn’t have form or shape, it often anthropomorphizes God so that we gain an understanding of His nature. This is obvious in Psalm 91:4 where it speaks of God’s love for us as a bird loves her little ones. Psalm 91:4: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Now it is clear that God doesn’t have literal feathers and wings. This is where proper hermeneutics comes in. But it is a beautiful picture of God’s love and protection for those He loves. Human beings all need to find a refuge from all that this world sends our way and the Psalmist knew that there is no better refuge than our Creator. When the pressures of life rise up like a tsunami, we can hide under His wings, spiritually speaking, and find that in this there is protection and peace. You can count on this, King David says, because He is by nature faithful. Whatever is happening in your life today, find refuge in Jesus.
