A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.
Proverbs 13:1 NIV
A Wise Son
Here is a bit of Canadian wisdom: Robin M McLeod said, “There’s something uniquely Canadian in taking pride in humility.” Margaret Atwood said, “I think we as Canadians are by nature socially cautious and polite.” Gordon Lightfoot said, “Canada may not be perfect, but it is a place where we can hope to make a difference.” John E Brown said, “Canada is not just a nation, it’s a feeling.” Finally, Shania Twain said “I’ve been Canadian all my life, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

When we were raising our three sons, we spent quite a bit of time helping them make wise decisions. We would speak about what might happen if they chose poorly. We were blessed with three wise sons, all of whom have married well and continue to make wise decisions. Speaking of wisdom, we learned early on the importance of consistency. We tried our best to be consistent in our requests and discipline. Principles of child raising cross cultures and impact young lives around the globe. King Solomon noticed this, and, in his wisdom, he wrote this, in Proverbs 13:1: “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.” No family wants a mocking son. Dads have a great responsibility to help their children desire to be wise and then to make wise decisions. Dealing with our children consistently will go a long way in seeing them develop into wise adults who avoid all sorts of potentially painful and threatening decisions. There is much wisdom in God’s Word, and Christian parents are called to teach their children well in following the wisdom found in the Bible.
These have been words from the heart.
