Delivered Up

In Canada, a police officer who arrests an individual without a warrant has the limited discretion to hold the person for up to 24 hours until charges are laid and brought before a judge or justice to show cause as to why the person should be kept in custody. The Justice will assess whether there is a reason to detain the individual or else release them on any conditions. They must be taken before a justice either without unreasonable delay or in any event no later than 24 hours after arrest.

I’ve never been called up for jury duty, so my knowledge of what does go on in a court room is limited to the police procedurals I’ve seen on TV. Those charged are delivered to the courtroom to stand before the jury and judge. That is the sense used in the kangaroo court when Jesus was led before the religious leaders and then Pontius Pilate. Romans 4:25 says this, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” The religious and political leaders had no idea what they were doing when Jesus was delivered up to them and he was eventually led to Calvary. In his simple way, Paul says that all of this was for our sins. The religious leaders were not in charge here, nor was Pontius Pilate. Jesus was always in complete control of all that was taking place. He knew that only His death would bring God’s justice and mercy together, so that we can walk free from our sin and guilt. Jesus – delivered and raised up – for you.
