Words from the Heart for Wednesday September 7th, 2016

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

The Lord Goes With You

Just as Joshua needed the knowledge of God’s presence and strength to lead the people of God into the Promised Land, we need God’s presence and strength to live a holy life. Take some time and reflect on how God has been with you and encouraged you to be strong and courageous to do what is right and good.

Six Canadians are among only 100 people from around the world who have made the short list for a one-way trip to Mars. Mars One, the Netherlands-based organization looking to establish a human colony on the Red Planet, announced Monday that their candidate pool has been whittled down to 100, as the selection process moves onto Round 3. The Candidates include four people from Ontario and two from British Columbia. A seventh Canuck, from the Yukon, also reached the third round, but has since dropped out. Mars One initially received more than 200,000 applicants worldwide for the one-way mission to Mars. Of that, approximately 8,243 were from Canadians. Once the final 24 civilians are chosen, the $6-billion mission plan is to send a crew of four to depart Earth every two years, beginning in 2024.

Human beings are not created to live in a vacuum, separated from others. That’s why one of the worst punishments possible is to put someone into solitary confinement for an extended period of time. Loneliness is a terrible thing. This is true in a human sense and perhaps even felt more deeply in a spiritual sense. It is sin that divides us from our Creator and leads to that sense of spiritual emptiness that human beings spend so much time trying to fill. The Bible is the story of the Creator God who comes searching for those lost to sin and guilt. He longs for relationship with us and in Jesus Christ He has come to redeem us and draw us back to Himself. Long before Jesus stepped into our world, the Bible gave this promise in Deuteronomy 31:8: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” God revealed Himself as the God who is with His people. He promised the people of Israel that He would never leave them or forsake them. He makes the same promise to us as well. That is why Jesus was given the name Immanuel which means God with us. God is present in this world. And for those who repent and trust Jesus Christ, He draws even closer, taking up residence in us.

These have been words from the heart.
