Words from the Heart for Wednesday October 5th, 2016
The path of the righteous is level; you, the Upright One, make the way of the righteous smooth.
Isaiah 26:7 (NIV)
Do you feel alone in the spiritual battles that you face? The Lord’s promise is not to make your life easy, but to keep you on the path of life. Giving in to temptation causes upheaval, but the way of the Lord is the right path. The Lord is doing what is right and good for you. Trust that he is working in ways that are good, even if you cannot see it right now.
Unless you are Torontonian, you likely have not heard of PATH. That is P-A-T-H all capitalized. PATH is downtown Toronto’s underground walkway linking 30 kilometres of shopping, services and entertainment. Follow PATH and you’ll reach your downtown destination easily in weatherproof comfort. According to Guinness World Records, PATH is the largest underground shopping complex with 30 km (19 miles) of shopping arcades. It has 371,600 square metres (4 million square feet) of retail space. In fact, the retail space connected to PATH rivals the West Edmonton Mall in size. The approximate 1,200 shops and services, such as photocopy shops and shoe repairs, found in PATH, employ about 5,000 people. Once a year, businesses in PATH host the world’s largest underground sidewalk sale. More than 50 buildings and office towers are connected by PATH.
Hiking on a rocky, uneven trail is a real challenge. So often in the spiritual realm, we feel like we are walking on just such a path. There is so much that seems to trip us up – temptation, disappointment, heartbreak and so much more. Just when we seem to be doing well and life is going along swimmingly, something happens and our walk with Christ becomes more of a challenge and burden than a joy. But that shouldn’t be the normal Christian life. Isaiah 26:7 says “The path of the righteous is level; you, the Upright One, make the way of the righteous smooth.” The answer to a consistent Christian life is found in this verse. The path of the righteous is level. What makes us righteous? Too many followers of Jesus try to live a righteous life in their own power. But the Bible is clear that our righteousness is as useless as a pile of filthy rags. The righteousness that enables us to walk a consistent godly life is Jesus’ righteousness implanted in us. The righteous are those who have allowed Jesus to be Lord of their lives and who allow Him to live out His life through them. When we die daily to self and sin, and allow the Holy Spirit to fill us and control us, the external events of life that used to so easily trip us up no longer do so. Jesus wants to make your walk smooth today. Allow Him to fill and lead your life so that will be so.
