Words from the Heart for Wednesday May 3rd, 2017

Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.

Psalm 36:5 (NLT)

Your Unfailing Love

We can never measure the faithfulness of our God! And, there’s no measuring instrument that can accurately tell us how much we are loved by the Lord. We can only describe His faithfulness and love to us as being vast as the heavens and reaching far beyond the clouds. And, just for good measure, His love is unfailing, too!

When we think of farming on Canada’s western prairies we usually think of wheat, flax and canola. Not dairy farming. The history of dairy farming in Canada’s West is one of unfailing hope and determination. The long cold winters are a challenge for livestock and the great distance between communities made transporting milk less economically viable. In the early days of settlement, most dairy cows had been brought from traditional farms back east by those settling in the west. The census of the Northwest Territories in 1884 to 1885 enumerated 5711 milk cows in the district of Assiniboia which is now southern Saskatchewan, and 1985 in the district of Saskatchewan which became the central part of the province when it was birthed in 1905. The first commercial dairy farm in northern Saskatchewan started in 1873.

When I was in my teens I used to love sitting on the beach at our family cottage and staring up into the night sky. I would always wonder how far eternity was and what was beyond what I could see. I never did become an astronomer, but there is something wonderful about considering that endlessness of space. King David pondered such things, as well as the goodness of God. In Psalm 36:5 he writes “Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.” As David looked into the heavens, and pondered the eternality of space, he recognized that God’s love was like that. He knew this from experience. When he sinned, God offered grace and forgiveness. When he needed the Lord’s protection and favour, the Lord offered it freely. Over and over again, David had experienced the unfailing love of God. Like the heavens, it went on and on. The Lord had given David promise and after promise and He had never failed to keep them. The good news is that the God who showered His unfailing love and unending faithfulness to David is the same God who has been revealed to us in the person of Jesus Christ. The promises that have been recorded in the Bible by the saints of old are just as surely for us today. Have you experienced God’s eternal love and unfailing faithfulness? Praise Him today for all He has done in your life.
