God looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God.

Psalm 53:2 (NLT)

God Looks Down

There’s something very sad about this verse. How is it that mankind has strayed so far from the One Who made us? He stands ready to meet our every need and yet so many ignore Him. Let us be those who are found by Him to honour Him. We can bring Him pleasure by being the ones who are seeking Him.

Police across Canada have been clamping down on distracted driving. Statistics are showing that talking or texting on your cell phone is as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. So what does the law actually say about what you can or can’t do with your phone while you are driving? According to Ottawa police Sgt. Mark Gatien, “Not only is it illegal to use your device, but it’s also illegal to take it into your hands, whether it’s a phone or an MP3 player.” Since the law is hand-specific, having the device in your lap is OK, but looking down at it is illegal. “If the device is in your lap, it’s a grey area. You haven’t committed an offence by having it on your lap, but as soon as you look down at it, you’ve taken your eyes off the road and you’ve committed an offence.”

Some of you will remember the little Sunday School song, “Be careful little eyes what you see.” It speaks of living a life of purity by remembering that “the Father up above is looking down in love.” David understood this to be so and writes in Psalm 53:2: “God looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God.” God doesn’t miss a thing. He is aware of everything that takes place on this planet. I love the story in Acts 10 of the centurion Cornelius. God knew his name, had heard his prayers and noticed his acts of compassion. So he sent for Peter to come share the Gospel with him. This is a great illustration of what David is speaking about. God sees everything and is looking for those who are seeking Him. There are two comforting truths here. First, in our day when we see the horrific things that are happening around the world and too often in our own neighbourhoods, we wonder if God is paying attention. He is. And the Bible tells us that one day He will bring justice to bear on every sin and every evil deed. Second, He knows those who belong to Him. He knows your heart that loves Him and seeks Him. Rest assured of His deep love for you.
