Words from the Heart for Wednesday January 11th, 2017

For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield.

Psalm 5:12 (NKJV)

Like a Shield

This is an amazing picture in this verse. The Lord provides a shield for us. That is a piece of military protection. This shield is not made of the strongest steel. Instead, we are actually protected and guarded by the favour of the Lord. The Lord knows what we need in each area of our life. Today be mindful of the provision of the Lord. Watch for His favour to be at work in your life.

The Canadian Shield, the exposed portion of the continental crust underlying North America, covers more than half of Canada. In the early days of Canada’s history, it was a barrier to exploration and settlement. More recently, it has yielded an abundance of resources, which has helped lead Canada to prosperity. The Shield also contains some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson once wrote of the north shore of Lake Superior, in the heart of the Canadian Shield, “”I know of no more impressive scenery in Canada for the landscape painter. There is a sublime order to it – the long curves of the beaches, the sweeping ranges of hills, the headlands that push into the lake.”” If you have never visited the Canadian Shield, you are missing some of Canada’s most stunning landscape.

Soldiers and police officers no longer have to carry shields around. When Kevlar was invented and put into bulletproof vests, shields became extinct, except in museums. The Bible often speaks about a shield – it was a common piece of equipment for a soldier and it was often the only thing that stood between life and death. If verses like Psalm 5:12 were written today they would speak about things like steel armour and Kevlar vests, but they weren’t, so instead we read, “For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield.” The righteous have always needed the Lord’s protection. Anyone who takes a stand for truth and righteousness will be misunderstood and opposed. This is certainly true in our day. Never before has there been more cases of Christian persecution and opposition. This is not just the case in countries where Christians have long faced persecution, but more and more in the secular west, where non-Christians want the freedom to live any way they want with no consequences and no boundaries. David had experienced something that persecuted Christians today testify to – in the midst of the greatest opposition the world can offer, God gives favour and protection. If you are facing challenges because of your faith, at school, at work, at home, ask the Lord to surround you with His favour, and you will experience Him shielding your heart.
